[Kimoto Glass]Enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime sake encounter with “OPTICA”, a Japanese-French collaboration from Kimoto Glass

Founded in 1931,KIMOTO GLASS TOKYOis a glassware wholesaler that has produced numerous commercial products, including sake serving cups, having developed extensive expertise with glassware. A new product, OPTICA, has been developed in conjunction with French design team SCMP DESIGN OFFICE through the Edo Tokyo Kirari Project, a product development project undertaken by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, in which KIMOTO GLASS TOKYO is taking part. Glass production was handled by KIMOTO GLASS TOKYO’s partner, the Tokyo-based handmade glass workshop Tajima Glass. — Collaboration with France during the COVID-19 pandemic was conducted through online meetings, and despite the many challenges of not being able to share prototypes face-to-face, wonderful collaborative work was achieved.

The idea for OPTICA came from SCMP DESIGN OFFICE, a company that loves Japanese sake and has great respect for Japanese culture. They wanted to create glassware that people could cup in both hands to appreciate sake in a beautiful way, similar to the tea ceremony. To achieve this, the bottom of each glass is weighted, creating a balance that makes you want to support it with both hands. Also, since the opening of each glass is wider, the sake flows easily into the mouth without the need for exaggerated lifting of the chin, creating a silhouette enabling a natural, more beautiful way of drinking.

The name OPTICA comes from the term “optical,” deriving from the optical lens of a camera, which was the inspiration for the design. OPTICA also expresses the desire for customers to experience the delicate beauty of glass and the brilliant shimmer of Japanese sake through reflections of light created by the transparent glassware.
KIMOTO GLASS TOKYO hopes you enjoy every encounter with this glassware, which combines technology that is the pride of Japan with fine French sensibilities to create a truly graceful drinking experience.
