[Shiina Kiriko (GLASS-LAB)] An Immersive Art Bottle Collection Brings to Life the World of Hokusai

Established in 2014, Shiina Kiriko (GLASS-LAB) is an original glass brand that combines two distinct techniques: Edokirikocut glass and sandblasting.

Shiina Glass was founded in 1950 in Tokyo’s Kiyosumi Shirakawa, and its second-generation craftsman, Shiina Yasuo, specializes in thehirakirikoflat-faceting technique—a signature of Edokiriko. Meanwhile, third-generation craftsman Shiina Yasuyuki is a specialist in sandblasting. By engraving patterns on the bottom of glasses using sandblasting and applyinghirakirikoto the sides, they have created innovative glassware that transforms into a kaleidoscope of patterns when filled with water.

Among their creations, the Hokusai Series is especially popular both in Japan and abroad. The collection featuresguinomi(sake cups) and old-fashioned glasses inspired by iconic works from Hokusai’sThirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, includingUnder the Wave off Kanagawa,orThe Great Wave, andStorm Below Mount Fuji—pieces in such high demand that customers have been known to face a waiting period of several months to buy them.

In collaboration with the ongoing exhibition HOKUSAI: ANOTHER STORY in TOKYO, held at Tokyu Plaza Shibuya from Saturday, February 1, 2025, Shiina Kiriko has designed special edition craft gin bottles in partnership with Tokyo’s Fukagawa Distillery. Limited to just 30 sets worldwide, this exclusive creation features the iconic Hokusai motifs.

The bottles featurehirakirikodetailing at the top and bottom, with sandblasted depictions ofThe Great WaveandStorm Below Mount Fujiat the center. By deliberately forgoing the typical Edokirikotechnique ofirokise(colored glass overlay), the intricate designs emerge in striking monochrome—elevating the fusion of Hokusai’s artistry and contemporary craftsmanship.
