[Kyogen] A Moment to Savor Autumn Through Kamon Art at The Peninsula Tokyo

Kyogen is a studio dedicated to elevating traditionalkamon(family crests) into art and sharing their appeal with audiences both in Japan and overseas. Now on display in the first-floor lobby of The Peninsula Tokyo (Yurakucho, Chiyoda-ku) isThe Peninsula Tokyo + Kaede + Art,akamonart piece created by third-generation Shoryu Hatoba and fourth-generation Yoho Hatoba until October 30, 2025.

The large-scale work spans 11.2 meters in width and 7.6 meters in height, depicting the beauty of Japanese autumn across 112 sheets ofwashipaper using a digital printing method known assomezuri—a fusion of the unique warmth of Japanese paper and digital precision. “We adjusted the color tones in faded or unclear areas of the original artworkMaple Tree,a National Treasure by Tohaku Hasegawa, so they would harmonize with the lobby—the face of The Peninsula Tokyo—and added more maple leaves to heighten the sense of luxury,” says Shoryu.

Following its 2024 debut,The Peninsula Tokyo + Kaede + Artreturns again this year to adorn the lobby. The background features a digitally redrawn version of Tohaku Hasegawa’sMaple Tree, which is under the ownership of Chishakuin Temple in Kyoto, the head temple of the Chisan School of Shingon Buddhism. At its center is a customkamondesign inspired by maple leaves, incorporating the letter “P” for Peninsula.

Asmonsho-uwaeshi—artists ofkamoncrests—the Hatoba family have inherited the precise, geometry-based traditions ofkamondesign, built entirely from circles and straight lines. Since launching their design practice in 2010, which fuses hand-drawing and digital techniques, they have received commissions from leading global brands and companies.

The Peninsula Tokyo is among those clients. Why not take time this autumn to enjoy the beauty of Japanese tradition reimagined through contemporary sensibility, in a setting of utter tranquility—a moment to truly savor the season.
