[Kyogen] SpringKamonArt Adorns the Lobby of The Peninsula Tokyo
2026.03.27
LIFEKyogen is expanding the expressive potential ofkamon(family emblems) into design and art by incorporating digital technology into traditional hand-drawn techniques. Akamonartwork titledThe Peninsula Tokyo + Sakura + Art, created by third-generation Shoryu Hatoba and fourth-generation Yoho Hatoba, is currently on display in the first-floor lobby of The Peninsula Tokyo (Yurakucho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) until April 30, 2026.
Commissioned by the hotel to express the essence of Japanese spring, the Hatoba father and son drew inspiration fromSakura-zu(Cherry Trees), a National Treasure owned by Chishakuin Temple in Kyoto, the head temple of the Chisan School of Shingon Buddhism, and one of the representative works of Kyuzo Hasegawa, son of Tohaku Hasegawa, a leading painter of the Azuchi–Momoyama period.
With the cooperation of Chishakuin Temple, the original color palette was reinterpreted based on their own vision and recreated using digital techniques. The resulting work is a powerful depiction of a large cherry tree and its blossoms, with an originalkamondesign at the center incorporating the letter “P” for Peninsula. Printed on Mino washi using a special technique, the piece is a monumental work measuring 11.2 meters wide and 7.6 meters high. Suspended against the lobby’s wooden lattice, it presents a breathtaking sense of scale and beauty.
Since its debut in 2024, the work has been well received by visitors from Japan and abroad, and this marks its third year on display. Why not experience this expression of the Japanese spring, created by Shoryu and Yoho Hatoba, in person?
