[Matsuzaki Doll] A Palm-Sized Pair of Charming Hina Dolls for Seasonal Interior Display

Seasonal festival dolls symbolizing wishes for children’s healthy growth are a cultural tradition passed down in Japan since ancient times. For over 100 years, Matsuzaki Doll has been producing such festival dolls while preserving the craftsmanship of the Edo period. Looking ahead to Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day) 2026, the workshop has introduced an adorable new creation, the Delight in Display Tonotohime Hina Dolls.

Standing at around 10 centimeters tall, the emperor and empress dolls are palm-sized, making them easy to display regardless of location. The full set—including the dolls themselves as well as the folding screen, candlesticks, and other accessories—is arranged inside the box according to the actual display layout, which helps avoid confusion when setting up or storing the dolls. Because the set does not include a display platform, owners can use their favorite lacquered trays or mats to enjoy a different atmosphere each year, truly embodying the concept of “delight in display.” Easy to take out and put away, the dolls can continue to decorate a space as seasonal interior décor even after a child has grown up.

The complete set includes accessories such as a folding screen, candlesticks, food containers (hokai), emperor and empress stands, and cherry blossom and tachibana orange ornaments. Delight in Display Tonotohime Hina Dolls, 88,000 yen.

Thehinadolls created by Matsuzaki Doll are made using the traditional wood-sculpting technique known as Edokimekomi. Grooves are carved into a body formed by hardening a mixture of paulownia wood powder andfunoriseaweed glue, after which fabric is applied and pressed into the grooves to create the costume. “The face is truly the life of a doll,” says third-generation artisan Mitsumasa Matsuzaki, and indeed, each Matsuzaki doll is rich in individual character.

The dolls’ delicate expressions are painted using an ultra-fine menso brush, and their gentle faces convey a soft, calming presence.
