LIFEWith growing awareness of the SDGs, upcycling—a sustainable practice that repurposes discarded materials and forms to create new value—has been attracting increasing attention. Mori Seimenjo, a bedding manufacturer, has collaborated with Tokyo Metro, which promotes resource recycling, to develop an upcycled long cushion cover and long cushion. The series is aptly named Ouchi de Yurutto Metro (Relax with Metro at Home), and it reuses actual seat fabrics from Tokyo Metro train cars.
The covers for Ouchi de Yurutto Metro cushions are made from the seat upholstery of the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line Series 05 and the Hanzomon Line Series 08. The fabric, known as moquette, is a highly durable woven textile that is also flame-retardant and breathable. With its soft texture and moderate cushioning, it makes the ideal cushion cover material. The long cushions are available in two lengths—120 cm and 170 cm—making them perfect for lying down or using as body pillows.

The cushion’s inner filling features a recycled elastomer structure as its core—the same type used in railway seating—encased in a blend of organic cotton and recycled polyester made from PET bottles. Each cushion is carefully assembled by Mori Seimenjo’s skilled futon artisans, who wrap the padding by hand. The resulting structure recreates the elasticity and comfort of an actual train seat.

The outer fabric surrounding the cushion core is made from sturdy, heavyweight organic cotton oxford cloth. Using internationally certified dyeing techniques that meet global safety and environmental standards, the fabric is printed with the route maps of the Tozai and Hanzomon Lines, along with the Tokyo Metro line logos, reflecting careful attention to environmental impact even in the details.

Starting October 9, 2025, Ouchi de Yurutto Metro cushions have been listed as a return gift for hometown tax donations (furusato nozei) to Koto City. Applications can be made through various online platforms, including Furusato Choice, Rakuten Furusato Nozei, Furunavi, Satofull, and JRE MALL Furusato Nozei. Each order comes with an Upcycling Certificate that details the line, train formation number, and the date when the respective car entered service.
In addition, general sales will begin in late November through the crowdfunding platform GREEN FUNDING, which will allow more people beyond hometown tax donors to purchase these unique items. Be sure to check out this special collaboration between Mori Seimenjo and Tokyo Metro.
