[Nakamura] Noren-do: The Media Platform Bringing Noren to the World

As of November 2024, Nakamura, a company based in Tokyo’s Kanda that specializes in the creation, design, and production of noren(traditional partitioning curtains), has launched its own media platform, Noren-do, delving into the cultural significance of noren and shares their distinctive charm with the world.

Often seen at Japanese restaurants and around and about towns and cities, noren are an iconic part of Japan’s cultural heritage, frequently depicted in Edo-period ukiyo-e prints. Traditionally, noren were used by shop owners to display their store names or kamon(family crests) on fabric, hanging them at the entrance as a sign for their businesses. Over time, noren have also come to stand for a shop’s brand and reputation, giving rise to common expressions such as “noren o mamoru” (preserving a business’s tradition and credibility) or “noren-wake” (the passing down of a brand or business rights).

On the Noren-do website, readers can explore noren from a variety of angles, including themed articles that examine topics like the history of noren, the connection between noren and family crests, and their role as advertising signs. The site also features the “Noren Collection,” showcasing noren depicted in ukiyo-e prints and historical texts, and “Noren Perspectives,” a series of interviews with experts like artists and architects who discuss the cultural significance of these iconic symbols of tradition. Even for Japanese locals who have grown up accustomed to noren, Noren-do is full of new insights and surprises.
