Mariko Funayama, who was in charge of design, said, This product was born out of our desire to take on a new challenge in the year that we celebrated our 50th anniversary, making use of the manufacturing concepts and techniques that we have cultivated thus far.” At Tsuchiya Kaban, a “Randsel” manufacturer that has nurtured our craft, we wanted to take on the challenge of making a bag that was suitable for business for adults, with all the advantages of our children’s “Randsel” school bags. The whole company came together to develop this product, not only in the Planning and Design Department, but also the Sales and After-sales Support Departments, and the Randsel craftsmen and business bag craftsmen.

Out of this was born the large lid, like a Randsel, and a smart design with a narrow gusset width that fits an A4 clear file standing vertically. The manufacturing techniques from “Randsel” school bags were applied to the back and shoulder belts, making them sturdy and easy to carry.

Ms. Funayama said, “By our plumping the cushion material in the back so that it fits to your back, luggage is supported at the waist which is popular because it is less likely to make you tired.”

They have also installed a zipper pocket on the side, considering business situations for adults in which they would need to take out their wallets and smartphones, so that this can be done even with the lid closed. Because you will often also want to carry it in your hand, particular attention was paid to usability with an easy-grip handle on the back. In order to make overlapping seams look like a single piece of leather, special paint was applied many times to create a smooth finish, and this careful attention to detail comes from many years of honing their craft.

There are currently three main types of leather used for the “Otona Randsel.” By using both nume leather made in Japan with its firm, hard texture, together with supple oil leather from Italy, you can enjoy the tasteful changes as the bag ages. In 2020, a broader segment was targeted with the use of waterproof smooth leather that can be used without worry about rain.
