[Domyo] OYMOD: The New Experimental Label Reversing the Concept of Kumihimo

Since its founding in 1652, Domyo has upheld the tradition of handcraftedkumihimobraided cords. Over the centuries, the long-established brand has producedkumihimofor a variety of uses, from cords to secure sword scabbards toobijimecords for kimono sashes andhaori-himojacket ties, developing a wide range of patterns and techniques. In 2015, Domyo launched the Western-accessory brand DOMYO, which introduced neckties and jewelry crafted withkumihimo, winning praise for its innovative approach to tradition.

This autumn, a new experimental label will debut within DOMYO, born from a desire to makekumihimoa part of everyday life for even more people. The label is called OYMOD—a reversal of “DOMYO.” Its name embodies the idea of turning convention upside down, reinterpreting the art ofkumihimothrough experimentation, and reworking its essence with bold, unconventional ideas.

The first release from OYMOD is thekumihimobelt. Inspired by theobijimecords used to fasten kimono, the belt uses the rich colors and intricate patterns ofkumihimoto make a statement piece complementary to any style. Each belt takes on a different look depending on how it is tied, adding to its appeal. In Japan, the traditional colors, patterns, and knots ofkumihimoall carry unique meanings. By blending these age-old expressions with moder fashion sensibility, thekumihimobelt highlights the wearer’s individuality and style—capturing the attention of both younger generations and international audiences.

The OYMOD label will make its debut with a special pop-up exhibition and sale at Kumihimo Experience by DOMYO in Tokyo’s Kagurazaka. Stop by and discover a new side ofkumihimocraftsmanship and creativity.
