[Isehan-Honten] Beni Museum “Authentic Aesthetic-Toshihiko Iwata Exhibition”

Lacquerware Art Creating Beauty with Light and Shadows.

Founded in 1825, Isehan, the last Beniya store, is to hold a hand-craft display, “Authentic Aesthetic – Toshihiko Iwata Exhibition”, at the Beni Museum in Minato-ku, Tokyo, until Sunday December 20, 2020.

Lacquer has been used in various forms, in everything from arts and crafts to creating daily necessities, due to its robust coating and lustrous beauty.
In this exhibition, Toshihiko Iwata, a lacquer artist who utilizes traditional lacquer techniques to create works that fit in with modern sensibilities using unconventional forms of expression, will present his works to the public.

Iwata has created many flat panel works with plant, insect, and family-crest motifs, all drawn with precision on flat surfaces in geometric lines and patterns. In recent years, he has also been working on art that brings out accidental and out-of-the-ordinary expressions found in lacquer usingsabilacquer. In this exhibition, Isehan will exhibit and sell 27 new beni panels as well as past works by Iwata, who continues to present the world with the charm of new lacquer art.

Visit the Beni Museum to see the authentic techniques and rare aesthetic in the art of Iwata that will inspire you.
