Mokume-ganeis a traditional metalworking technique unique to Japan, whereby differently colored metals are layered, then twisted and carved to create intricate and elegant patterns.Mokume-ganeoriginally developed as a craft to create decorative tsuba (sword mountings) for samurai swords, but has also been used to make accessories and daily necessities.

As its trade name suggests, Mokume-Ganeya keeps the mokume-gane technique alive in a form more suited to modern lifestyles. The handcrafted patterns created by their craftsmen are unique to each piece, resulting in jewelry that creates a special bond between a couple, such as wedding rings that symbolize a unique and unparalleled happiness.

One of our best-known products, theTsunagaru-katachiis a pair of wedding rings that start out in the hands of a craftsman as a single ring, which is then split to be shared as two complementary rings for two people. We believe that the essence of marriage is for two people to establish a “connected whole” as life partners, and the designs we pursue symbolize this.

A solitary ring imprinted with a shared experience between two people is transformed into a pair of rings unique in the world, reaffirming that the bond between these two people can endure forever. This innovative jewelry, which turns designing a ring into a memory of the experience, was the first Japanese wedding ring to receive a Good Design Award.

The “Wakachiau Baby Ring” was born from this idea and is experiential jewelry that can strengthen family ties. It recently won the German “iF Design Award 2023,” one of the world’s three major design awards.
The top of the pendant is engraved with the baby’s birth date, and can later be split to be worn as two separate pendants by the parent and child.
The pendant is designed as a miniature version of the parents’ wedding rings, albeit still connected. Such jewelry that allows a child to have the same experience as his or her parents comes to symbolize their deep familial bond. The swirling patterns of mokume-gane are akin to one’s unbroken family history. Why not take this opportunity to own a piece of jewelry that will allow you to feel the bonds between a family, while passing on the charms of traditional Japanese techniques to the next generation?
