[KOSOEN (Murata Dyeing INDUSTRY)] Pop-Up Store at Narita Airport Showcasing the Beauty of Japan Blue

KOSOEN is an indigo dyeing studio founded in 1989 by Murata Dyeing INDUSTRY, a producer of dyed thread with deep roots in Ome City, a town historically renowned for textiles. Known for its commitment to traditional craftsmanship, KOSOEN uses natural indigo from Tokushima Prefecture and employs time-honored dyeing techniques without chemical additives.

Japanese indigo, often called “Japan Blue,” is prized not only for its deep, rich hues but also for its sustainable production—made entirely from natural materials, with leftover dye liquid even serving as fertilizer. As interest in sustainable fashion grows, this traditional craft is once again gaining recognition both in Japan and abroad.

In October 2024, KOSOEN opened a limited-time pop-up shop inside Narita Airport to share the allure of indigo dyeing with a wider audience. Located in the pre-departure area, the shop is accessible to all visitors—not just international travelers.

The bright, open space of the store highlights the beauty of indigo in all its shades. The lineup includes hand-dyed items featuring intricate shibori (tie-dye) patterns, delicate gradient designs, and a range of apparel and accessories such as scarves, T-shirts, and pullovers.

KOSOEN’s signature style blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, creating a “traditional-modern” aesthetic that is showcased in its biannual apparel collections. The aiport pop-up also offers exclusive items, making it a must-visit destination for those looking to experience authentic Japanese indigo dyeing. Although the shop will only be open for six months, it promises to introduce Japan Blue to a whole new audience—both domestic and international.
