[Tokyo Crude Drugs Association] Talk Event on “Traditional Medicine and Self-Medication”

Yomeishu, Kyushin, Ryukakusan, Jintan—many traditional medicines passed down through generations in Japan remain highly valued today. Most of these are based on shoyaku (crude drugs), natural medicinal ingredients derived from plants and animals, and have long supported people’s health as household remedies for various conditions like fatigue recovery and cough relief.

These traditional medicines are now gaining renewed attention from the perspective of preventive medicine. Since the Edo period, Japan has followed the concept of yojo, which focuses on maintaining good health to avoid illness—what we might call a “health regimen” today. Recently, so-called self-medication has been promoted as part of this approach. Self-medication involves engaging in regular exercise and improving lifestyle habits to prevent chronic diseases and manage health. It also includes treating minor ailments at home before seeking medical attention, an area in which over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, including traditional medicines available at pharmacies and drugstores, play a crucial role.

On September 21, the Tokyo Crude Drugs Association, which promotes the use of medicinal plants, will hold a talk event titled “Traditional Medicine and Self-Medication.” Keichi Sudo, a licensed pharmacist and a former advisor to Kyushin Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., will give a lecture introducing familiar traditional medicines and offering tips on how to use OTC medicines for personal health management. If you’re curious about why traditional medicines have been cherished for so long or are unsure about how to manage your daily health, this is just the event for you.
