[Kyogen] Engraved on the World’s Only Super-Luxury Car Built With Traditional Japanese Craftsmanship is a “Mon” Crest

On May 17, 2022, at New York Design Week in New York, a Tailor Made* specification of the Ferrari Roma, made by Italian super-luxury car maker Ferrari, was unveiled.
The interior of the only model in the world features traditional Japanese techniques such as Amami Oshima Tsumugi “Sakiori”** and “SUKUMO Leather” leather indigo dyeing.Kyogen, which actively participates in the Edo Tokyo Kirari Project, also played a role with the Ferrari Roma “mon” crest.

Kyogen produced an original crest for this one-of-a-kind Ferrari Roma. Designed by Shoryu Hatoba, a Monsho-uwaeshi, the crest represents a wheel from an ox-drawn carriage, traditionally popular among aristocrats and nobility, combined with the eight pistons of the Ferrari Roma’s V8 engine to form its spokes. The number 8 is a symbol of good luck, power and resilience, and is recaptured in the eight wave crests that encircle the wheel. The history, profoundness and dynamism of Ferrari are expertly incorporated into the “mon” crest, and within the classic design that is reminiscent of a family crest, one can feel the very essence of Ferrari.

** Sakiori is one of the oldest examples of upcycling in the world. Worn-out kimonos are disassembled, their fabric cut into strands and re-woven with new fibers, then used to create a material that is warm, comfortable and durable.
