Here, we will be introducing the “Folding Screen S ‘Haneda Kamon,’” a work designed by Shoryu Hatoba ofKyogen. This work by Shoryu will allow you to appreciate his artistry up close. Shoryu is known for carrying on the techniques used in monsho uwae – the art of hand-drawing family crests on kimonos – and his skill as a monsho uwae painter.

Family crests are said to have emerged in Japan when Japanese aristocrats began using them to decorate belongings such as furniture, clothing, and ox carts in the Heian Period (794 – 1185). Around the same time period, a family crest has been painted upon a byobu (traditional Japanese folding screen), a type of furniture favored from for partitioning rooms and as works of art. The byobu format means the product is easy to fold up and move around. Simply place it in your preferred location to create a modern, Japanese-style atmosphere with meaning and depth. It can also be used as a background for your favorite small objects.

The “Haneda Kamon” features traditional Japanese patterns such as the original Haneda crest, with its jet engine motif and more, as well as good-luck motifs like cranes and turtles, elegant peonies, and three exquisitely-balanced Tokugawa hollyhock motifs. The online shop offers the product in three sizes, including S size. Sharpen your creative senses and add depth to your room with this product.
