The power of herbal medicines for self-medication
Peony has an analgesic effect, glycyrrhiza is known for its anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties, platycodon is used as an antitussive and expectorant, and dong quai is used for gynecological conditions such as sensitivity to cold. Medicinal plants have been used for medication since ancient times, but have now begun to attract attention again with a rise in health consciousness. Since its founding in 1953, the Tokyo Crude Drugs Association has actively worked to promote crude drugs using medicinal plants.
One of their many activities is the cultivation of medicinal plants. A project is being promoted to secure the domestic production of drugs with reliable traceability from 5 bases nationwide, including Akita Prefecture. “Medicinal Plant Instructor” certification is also carried out to develop human resources involved in herbal medicines and medicinal plants, and regular follow-up training is also conducted.
Efforts are made through events etc. to increase public awareness of the importance and significance of crude drugs and medicinal plants. For example, herbal medicine classes are held monthly at the medicinal botanical gardens in Kodaira City, which is administered by the Association. This touches on medicinal herbs and trees that can be found around us, introducing their efficacy and what kinds of drugs can be blended, in an easy-to-understand manner Observation sessions are also held at the medicinal botanical garden twice a year, in spring and fall. Academics that are part of the Association answer questions from participants while looking at the seasonal medicinal plants that can be found in nature. In the fall, a party is held to give thanks for that year’s harvest of medicinal drugs, and the park bustles with various events such as observation sessions and commemorative lectures, etc.
With self-medication being recommended these days, the Association focuses on events that spread information and understanding on OTC (over-the-counter) drugs. The aim is to deepen the understanding of herbal medicines used in OTC drugs and their proper usage, while sharing the importance of daily disease prevention and health management. Knowledge about herbal medicines and medicinal plants plays no small role in self-medication.
